A Novena for Pentecost: Praying the Spirit
Nine days of prayer from Ascension Day to Pentecost: the original Novena – praying for the coming of the Holy Spirit as our comforter and guide; praying for the fruits of the spirit; praying for the life of the church, for renewal and wholeness, for peace, justice and kindness.
The prayers can be said in households, by small groups in church or by an individual at home. A quiet place, a candle…

Saturday before Pentecost
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Gladden the soul of your servant,
for to you O Lord, I lift up my soul.
Praise, O praise the Holy Spirit,
Praise the Father, praise the Word,
Source, and Truth, and Inspiration,
Trinity in deep accord;
Through the Voice which speaks within us
Here on earth we praise the Lord.
The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3.17,18
Veni, creator Spiritus mentes tuorum visita, imple superna gratia, quae tu creasti pectora.
Qui diceris Paraclitus, altissimi donum Dei, fons vivus, ignis, caritas et spiritalis unctio.
Tu septiformis munere, digitus paternae dexterae tu rite promissum Patris sermone ditans guttura.
Accende lumen sensibus, infunde amorem cordibus, infirma nostri corporis, virtute firmans perpeti.
Amen.
O King enthroned on high, Comforter and Spirit of truth, you that are in all places and fill all things, the treasury of blessings and the giver of life, come and dwell with us, cleanse us from every stain and save our souls, O gracious one. Amen.
Our Father…
May the grace of the Holy Spirit enlighten our hearts and minds. Amen.
