Birch with Fallowfield
In 1975 a Bishop's Order allowed the benefices of Holy Innocents Fallowfield, and St James Birch in Rusholme to be held in plurality. In 1978, due to the rising costs of supporting two buildings and the discovery of dry rot St James Birch was closed and the two parishes were united as Birch with Fallowfield, with Holy Innocents as the parish church. The St. James building was eventually sold and converted into a private residence. It is now a care home.
In 1980 under the guidance of the rector Bill Wilson extensive work began to make the church a more flexible space to serve the needs of the Christian community. The church was never closed while the work took place. Worship took place amongst scaffolding and dust for many months but the results were worth the effort. In 1982 the ring of eight bells from St James Birch dating from 1863 were rehung in Holy Innocents. In 2000 the final stage of the reordering took place to create a meeting room and upper worship area. |
