Our worship is formal - predictable elements are repeated at each service, Bible readings are from the Church of England lectionary. There are candles, sometimes incense and the Eucharist is presided over by a priest. Sermons are short and respectful of mystery and difference: telling others how to behave forms no part of our culture.
We pay attention to music, imagery and symbolism and people can be drawn to the worship by this. Silence and time for reflection are important for us. The space is simple and uncluttered. A large resurrection crucifix dominates the wall: the risen Christ’s arms are there to include and embrace. Our congregation is very mixed: student, lecturer, asylum seeker, nurse, judge, refugee, florist, wrestler…. they are all drawn to be part of the generations of prayer that have filled the walls. We welcome visitors from near and far. We are used to change and turnover: people who stay for a while and move on, people who leave and then return. The church has a history of involvement in social justice issues. As in our name, we feel a strong link to the ‘innocents’ of the world: all those who for whatever reason are deprived of their dignity or unable to affect their own futures. |
The church is located on Wilbraham Road in Fallowfield, Manchester, near the junction with Wilmslow Road. The full address is Holy Innocents Church, Wilbraham Road, Fallowfield, Manchester, M14 6JZ.
