A Novena for Pentecost: Praying the Spirit
Nine days of prayer from Ascension Day to Pentecost: the original Novena – praying for the coming of the Holy Spirit as our comforter and guide; praying for the fruits of the spirit; praying for the life of the church, for renewal and wholeness, for peace, justice and kindness.
The prayers can be said in households, by small groups in church or by an individual at home. A quiet place, a candle…

Monday before Pentecost
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Gladden the soul of your servant,
for to you O Lord, I lift up my soul.
The words of NEH number 142 form the structure for our praise over this week:
Sing to God in whom creation
Found its shape and origin;
Spirit, moving on the waters
Troubled by the God within;
Source of breath to all things breathing,
Life in whom all lives begin.
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless.
Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40.28-end
O King enthroned on high, Comforter and Spirit of truth, you that are in all places and fill all things, the treasury of blessings and the giver of life, come and dwell with us, cleanse us from every stain and save our souls, O gracious one. Amen.
Our Father…
May the grace of the Holy Spirit enlighten our hearts and minds. Amen.

Padre nuestro,
que estás en el cielo.
Santificado sea tu nombre.
Venga tu reino.
