150 Years in South Manchester

A Short History

This is a series of three meetings on the histories of this area in the 150 years since the Church was consecrated in 1872. Each session will begin with a conversation between two or three historians and then will open into discussion.

Programme
14th October - Session 1
(Stuart Jones, Michael Ainsworth and others)
South Manchester in the 1870s
A village on the edge of the city in the 1870, Fallowfield became a middle-class suburb, home to those linked to the new university, the Manchester Guardian, and other cultural institutions.

18th November - Session 2
(Margaret Beetham and Ali Ronan)
Campaigners, Activists and Citizens
The many immigrant groups who settled in South Manchester helped shape its political and cultural life, as did activist women, like Olga Hertz (1871- 1946), who was a parishioner of Holy Innocents.

9th December - Session 3
(Martin Dodge, Stuart Jones and others)
Owens College to Owens Park: How Fallowfield became a centre for education
In 1872 Owens College, the forerunner of Manchester University, had around 500 students: today there are 80,00 students in Manchester. We explore the history of how and with what effect this area became a student quarter.
