The Unsung: Who Built this City?
The Autumn/Winter 2026/7 series of Saturday talks starts from Fallowfield stories but doesn’t end there.
Programme
October 3rd: Nick Roberts, Community Activist and Historian, with Kattie Kincaid, Chair.
At the centre of this talk is a black-and-white street scene taken from a 1905 postcard now beautifully transformed into a mural that borders the Church car park. Nick Roberts, who spent months digging through archives, old documents and photographs to help shape Ethan Lemon’s vision in the mural will talk about the people who lived here when the streets were built, and what these local streets have seen, as well as the public art that now enhances these streets. November 7th: Professor Sue Heath and Dr Kate Seymour
Professor Sue Heath, author of ‘Red Bricks and Mortar’ will talk about the history of student housing in the Redbrick Universities. Dr Kate Seymour will introduce a very recent Collective Inquiry on Sustainable Communities in Fallowfield undertaken with residents. We will reflect on how different histories have collided and where we are now. December 5th: Rev Michael Ainsworth and Friends
The Respectable and not quite so respectable musicians and artists of Fallowfield. Local streets were not just the home of Sir John Barbirolli and Professor Cosmo Rodewald. They were home to music teachers and opera singers, orchestral musicians who worked on the Blackpool piers in the summer, and Church organists who were magicians too. Expect to be entertained.
Further sessions in the spring (tbc) will explore:
February: the work of St Mary’s Home (for fallen women) in Dickenson Road. March: the development of Parks and Open Spaces. May: The story of fearless Phillis Skinner (1874 to 1950) of (for some time) Mauldeth Road, Ladybarn and member of the Women’s Peace Crusade. | ||||||||
